It Won’t
Happen to Me!
”Optimism bias”
is a deep-rooted instinctive human response. Optimism
bias is an experience where individuals foolishly think that they will
not become a victim even though they believe -- or statistics prove --
that a danger exists and it's generally known that it could happen.
Here are some examples of "Optimism bias” statements from women
regarding their personal safety.
I live in a safe neighborhood
I’m too fat, too ugly, too old
I only go out at night with someone
I took one of those classes
I know the basics, foot stomp, groin kick etc…
Here are some real facts:
You are at risk if you are a woman!!
Doesn’t matter what neighborhood you live in
Your weight looks or age doesn’t matter,
Some attackers see two women as a challenge,
Those classes and the basics will only get you
hurt!!
Statistics show that every three minutes a woman is raped, that only
shows the ones that are reported.
ONE OUT OF EVERY FOUR WOMEN WILL BE OR HAVE BEEN RAPED!!
Be Prepared
Admit that bad things can happen to anyone
Be responsible for your own safety and survival
Be aware of people around you
Be aware of potential danger areas, and situational red flags.
Develop a way of thinking that allows you to focus on surviving any confrontation.
